Thinking of Peridot

The greens of spring! Easter in a coastal meadow.

It’s August! This is the point in the summer when the marine layer pulls back offshore and we finally get some sun and heat, for the tomatoes, for the cucumbers, for our spirits. All gray everyday is hard on the old noggin! Even Mark Twain had something to say about the bleakness of a summer in coastal northern California.

But those greens, and the leaf textures and shapes, the scents—angels trumpet, night blooming jasmine—even the Naked Ladies. Heaven, especially viewed from the heat of summer.

If you were born in August, your birthstone is generally thought to be peridot. There are archaic references to onyx. Meh. For myself, if you like green, and that sort of yellowy spring green isn’t your thing, consider a tourmaline or even some moldavite. Then again, if you like the color, can you go wrong with a talisman that makes you regal and dignified or protects you from evil spirits?
